In addition to being a communal living space, Library Home will include a library and “really” free market that is open to the public in which goods and services (such as food, clothes and seminars) are exchanged but money is not.  The purpose of this would be to create a gift economy in which things are given freely without the hope or expectation of return.  Ideally, the program would be in more than one city (I envision a “V” shape between San Fran, NOLA & NYC) and the young artists & activists could go on “room swaps” enabling them to live in and experience different cities.  This would also help with cross pollination of ideas and art and DIY culture between these places.

The Library Homes would espouse a simple and plain “green” ethos rooted in a culture based on recycling, re-using and remixing that which is already there instead of buying more.  The inhabitants would typically not be wedded to a plethora of material objects, although state of the art laptops, musical instruments, and recording devices of all kinds will abound.
